Drilling and boring tools firmly under control

Tübingen, 16 September 2013 – Machine tools are becoming ever-more multifaceted, to make complete machining possible. In the meantime, many companies have integrated Capto spindles into their standard equipment that is available on the market. Walter will therefore supply tooling systems for counterboring and precision boring with Capto connections with immediate effect.

The Capto interface is the most universal interface of its type. It can be used for turning, drilling, counterboring, precision boring or milling, and for rotating and static machining – it is therefore being increasingly used on lathes, machining centres and multi-tasking machines. The operators of these machines only need one single interface system for all machining processes. Five coupling sizes means it is possible to use on both small and large machines.

This is reason enough for Walter AG to correspondingly adapt their  systems for counterboring and precision boring, and to offer, alongside NCT- and ScrewFit-type connections, connections with Walter Capto™ adaptors:

  • Walter Boring: Twin-insert boring tools with medium and maxi versions for holes of 20 to 640 mm. The stable and compact boring system has an internal coolant supply through to the cutting edges, and is suitable for symmetrically (z2) or radially displaced (Z1) roughing operations. A comprehensive range of indexable inserts, modular additions (such as aluminium bridges) or extensions means it is possible to make the most efficient tool setup for each application.
  • Walter Precision: Solid Carbide and Single-insert precision boring tools with mini, medium and maxi versions for holes of 2 to 640 mm. This precision boring system for finish machining up to IT6 has been designed to be  totally legible and highly precise. The settings are accurate to 2 µm. Depending on the hole diameter, either boring-bar, cartridge or bridge constructions made of aluminium are used. Furthermore, the system has an internal coolant supply through to the cutting edge and is also suitable for reverse machining.
  • Walter PrecisionDIGITAL: Single-edged precision boring tools for the most precise holes with a diameter of 3 to 124 mm. An optoelectronic encoder means it is possible to read micron-precise digital results. For holes with a diameter up to 10 mm, solid-carbide boring bars are available; for large diameters, bridges are available. The tool can be used up to a speed of 16,000 rpm. A maintenance-free, automatic balance compensation guarantees exact concentricity. Even here, the internal coolant supply ensures that coolant purposefully reaches the cutting edge.

Users of the Capto variants for this system will be able to make the most of a range of advantages: The interface is clamped using a conical polygon in accordance with ISO 26623 with a small cone angle. This creates a high clamping force and a good support face. The force is evenly distributed around the circumference of the polygon. The connection is completely backlash-free, offers repeat accuracy of +/- 2 µm, is self-centring and does not need any special locking device. The Capto adaptor is also shorter and therefore more resistant to bending than other adaptors, and the tendency to vibrate is correspondingly lower. This property primarily optimises precision boring, where a higher quality is desired.

Less vibration also means longer tool life. As a result, tool changes are reduced. Once tool-life end has finally been reached, the process-interruption times may be reduced since Capto tools can be changed very quickly and without any problems. The set-up times are also reduced to a minimum thanks to the handling benefits. Conclusion: All things considered, Walter Capto™ contributes to a significant reduction in machining costs.
