Mazak showcases two new horizontal machining centres at EMO 2013

The two new machines, which will be displayed in a special horizontal machining centre zone on the Mazak stand, have been designed to offer machine tool users exceptional levels of productivity and accuracy.

The MEGA 8800 is a super-high torque machine specifically developed to offer customers a high torque and high power spindle capable of  tackling general machining applications with difficult to cut materials such as titanium.

The best-in-class spindle performance of 4,000 rpm with a torque of 1,050Nm is allied to increased rigidity of the machine body to cope with the enhanced spindle performance. Extra rigidity is provided by a revised casting structure and by the use of linear roller guides.

Enhanced design of the X, Y and Z ball screws combined with a new column structure design delivers a 30% increase in machine rigidity for class leading machining performance. In addition, the MEGA 8800 is equipped with a new NC rotary table which uses oil to form a film between the outer ring of the cross roller bearing and disk, offering enhanced chatter suppression.

Alongside the MEGA 8800 in the horizontal machining zone will be the new HORIZONTAL CENTER NEXUS 4000-III complete with new compact 6 Pallet Changer system. The machine and optional 6PC are designed to provide unsurpassed performance, productivity, accuracy and reliability.



The HORIZONTAL CENTER NEXUS 4000-III has a large capacity, with a maximum workpiece diameter of 630mm with a height of 900mm. The machine also has the largest axis range in its class with an X-axis stroke of 630mm and a Y-axis and Z-axis stroke of 640mm.

However, although the machine is equipped with a large machining envelope it retains a compact design and uses three-point leveling to enable fast and efficient installation and start-up. What’s more, superior ergonomics, including large workplace and pallet doors, provide ease of access for the machine operator.

In addition, the highest levels of productivity are guaranteed with a range of spindle performance options ranging from 12,000 to 30,000 rpm; rapid traverse rates of 60,000mm/min; and fast chip-to-chip change times. The HORIZONTAL CENTER NEXUS 4000-III also incorporates a brand new main structure design which provides high rigidity and enables 1G acceleration.

To aid production scheduling, the machine on show at EMO 2013 is also equipped with new 6PC visualisation software integrated within the MAZATROL matrix Nexus software. The software enables multi-pallet scheduling of up to six pallets to enable continuous unmanned and lights-out machining, offering enhanced productivity and machine performance. The software enables the machine operator to check pallet location and status; whether the machine is in cutting condition and machining progress without changing the screen.
